These days there are so many choices for summer programs that it can make it difficult to choose. Everywhere you look there are camps and classes revolving around almost every theme. It’s easy to get lost on Google, scrolling through options, debating about which camps to sign the kids up for. One of those options, of course, is theater camp, and for numerous reasons, this is our personal favorite.
Not only is theater camp FUN at Lights, Camera, Acting!- we play lots of games, create characters, sing favorite musical tunes, and dance around- but it is fundamental. There are so many life skills that a child learns and builds through the theater arts; skills they may not pick up from other areas of education but which are equally important.
Many extracurricular programs focus on something called STEM. While these four areas- science, technology, engineering, and math- are obviously very important in creating a well-rounded individual in today’s fast-paced and digital world, there is another letter that is sometimes added, but often forgotten- A, for art.
The arts, while many times people do not realize it’s significance, has been proven to teach essential life skills. Many studies have been done to prove the effectiveness of art and theater, and to highlight the skills gained from participating in these programs. According to a 2013 article in the Washington Post, there are very specific areas of growth and development that theater supports. Here are only a few: confidence, problem-solving, focus, collaboration, and creativity. These are all skills that will come in handy in most professional and personal situations.
So, when thinking about summer camp, remember the A and join us at LCA for the arts. After all, Whether your child grows up to be a doctor, an engineer, a teacher, or a famous actor, dramatic arts will help them succeed.
Plus, it’s really really FUN! We can’t wait for a theater-filled summer at LCA!
